Travelers use the Navy-operated AMC air terminal at Naval Station Rota for Space-A flights on Spain's Atlantic coast, about 70 miles from the Strait of Gibraltar. Official terminal pages call the station the Gateway to the Mediterranean, across the bay from Cadiz in Andalusia. This is a U.S. Navy passenger facility, not an Air Force-run USAFE fighter-base port. The installation identity is Naval Station Rota, even when some AMC listings still say NAS Rota.

Where is the passenger terminal?

Air Terminal Rota, Alvaro de Bazan Street, Building 2, NAVSTA ROTA, SPAIN FPO 09645-1500.

Official USO Rota uses the same pin: Building 2, Rota Air Terminal, Alvaro de Bazan Street. On base. The AMC page does not publish a terminal-map URL. Nearby commercial airports listed on the page: Jerez de la Frontera, Sevilla, and Malaga.

How do I get on base / which gate should I use?

The AMC Rota page does not print gate names or gate hours.

This is a Spanish Navy installation. Official NGIS Rota and Navy Lodge Rota pages both print access/eligibility rules that are stricter than a typical CONUS gate:

NGIS (who may stay / access): active duty on TAD/TDY or leave; DoD civilians on TAD/TDY or leave (leave requires passport, CAC, and leave form); reservists only on TAD/TDY orders (CAC-only reservists not authorized); retirees with DD Form 2; dependents with DD Form 1173. U.S. contractors may come aboard with ODC Madrid approval but are not eligible to stay in the lodging facility.

Navy Lodge Rota “Base Access Policy” (official Lodge page, 27 Aug 2026): Active duty/spouse/dependents with valid military ID; retired military/dependents with retired ID; reservists only with official orders (leisure access not permitted); DAV: no base access; DoD personnel lodging with orders; DoD retirees: no base access unless previously approved; contractors with ODC clearance but lodging not permitted; third-nation visitors not allowed under SOFA unless for work. Lodging reservations do not guarantee base access.

A Saturday Space-A show without existing access is a planning problem. Confirm with the installation before you fly in.

What are hours, phone, DSN, and email?

Hours: 24/7. Even the (now expired) runway-closure banner said Passenger Services and the terminal would remain 24 hours for questions.

Conflicts: AMC directory prints 34-95-682-2411 (same digits, different grouping) and a second DSN 2171 that is not on the terminal contact block. Official page wins: 34-956-822-411 / DSN 314-727-2411.

How do I sign up for Space-A?

Email navstarotaspacea@us.navy.mil, or use the HQ AMC Space-A form and select NAS Rota Spain.

HQ AMC does not process sign-up. Print the completed form. The Rota HTML does not reprint a unique local field list.

How and when do I mark present?

Check in at the terminal. Remote email is not “present.”

The page: roll calls at the Terminal 3 hours prior to departure. Leftover sentence still recommends arriving about one hour before roll call “due to COVID 19 medical screening.” Treat COVID screening as dated leftover; the 3-hour roll call is what the page still prints. Bring all bags and documents.

When is roll call?

3 hours prior to departure at the Terminal, unless the current 72-hour product says otherwise.

As of the 16 Jun 2026 capture the Roll Call icon pointed at HISTORICAL 15th JUN 26.pdf — filename says historical, not a standing weekly report. Use today’s board, not a June historical PDF.

When should duty / PE passengers check in?

Leftover PE prose still on the HTML: duty passengers on PE may check in 24 hours prior; NLT 3 hours before scheduled PE departure; “see our tentative 30 Day Patriot Express Schedule below.”

There was no 30-day PE icon on the 16 Jun 2026 page (only 72-hour + roll-call icons). HQ AMC (and the Sigonella/Naples terminal banners) say PE at Rota ended 1 Oct 2025. Do not invent a current PE. For organic missions, use the 72-hour NLT; the only standing clock on this HTML is 3 hours prior.

Does this terminal operate Patriot Express flights? If yes, to where?

No current PE. HQ AMC Space-A page banner (live WebSearch 27 Aug 2026; also on the Sigonella and Naples terminal pages): PE at NS Rota, NSA Naples, NAS Sigonella, NSA Souda Bay, and Incirlik AB ended effective 1 October 2025.

Conflict: the Rota terminal page still prints PE check-in language and tells you to see a 30-day PE schedule that is not actually linked. Do not treat leftover HTML as a live PE. Organic / Navy missions only.

Where is short-term and long-term parking, max days, and pass rules?

Not published on the AMC Rota HTML. Do not invent a lot from unofficial blogs.

What lodging is nearby on-base and off-base?

AMC page: on-base billeting is very limited; personnel on orders should have reservations before arrival. It names Navy Gateway Inn and Suites and Navy Lodge.

Off-base (AMC page, no endorsement of rates): hotels in Rota, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Jerez de la Frontera, and Chipiona. July–September is summer high season — book ahead. Nightly rates are not published here.

Is there a USO, food, Wi-Fi, showers, lockers?

AMC page: USO is in the hallway next to the main lobby at the Air Terminal. Hours: Monday–Friday 08:30–16:30 and AMC flights supported. Quick link: https://rota.uso.org/

Official USO Rota (27 Aug 2026): same Building 2 address; +34 956 82 1252 · rotauso@uso.org; hours listed Mon–Fri 0830–1630 (does not reprint “and AMC flights supported”). Amenities: Wi-Fi, snacks/snack bar, computers, CAC readers, children’s play area, lounge — not showers/lockers.

The AMC HTML does not document terminal Wi-Fi, food counters, showers, or lockers outside the USO blurb. Treat those as unpublished unless USO is open.

What documents are required?

Space-A: DoDI 4515.13 eligibility plus passports/visas / FCG. Duty: travel orders. NGIS/Lodge access rules above are in addition to AMC eligibility — a Space-A signup does not get you a Spanish-base visitor pass. Have documents on your person.

What are baggage limits and Space-A/PE fees if published?

Bags (AMC Rota page): 2 bags per person, 70 lb and 62 linear inches each. One carry-on plus one personal item that must fit under any aircraft seat.

No head-tax dollar figure and no cash-vs-card rule are printed on the Rota HTML. A 2026 ROTA AMC GRAM UPDATED.pdf was linked on 16 Jun 2026; that PDF was not retrieved (Wayback 404 on the June capture). Do not invent Gram fees.

Can I travel with pets from here?

The page links CDC dog-import guidance and the CDC Dog Import Form. PE (typical pet-belly channel) ended 1 Oct 2025. NGIS and Navy Lodge are both pet-friendly for lodging. Confirm with the counter and AMC Pet Travel / FCG / CDC before you count on a pet moving on organic airlift.

Where are schedules posted?

AMC Rota icons as of 16 Jun 2026 Wayback 200 (latest 200 found):

  • 72-hour icon → ROTA_72HR_runway_closure.pdf — dated runway-closure product, not a standing 72-hour board. Banner on that capture: runway closed 25 May–14 July, no flights in that window. By 27 Aug 2026 that window is past. Live WebSearch snippets of the same AMC URL on 27 Aug 2026 did not reprint the runway banner. Do not treat the runway PDF as today’s board.

All flights subject to last-minute changes. Passenger agents “have no control over the amount of Space Available seats or aircraft departure schedules.”

Is Patriot Express still flying to Rota?

No. HQ AMC named Rota in the 1 Oct 2025 PE cutoff. This terminal page never got the PE-end banner (Naples and Sigonella did) and still has leftover PE check-in text without a 30-day PE file. Do not plan PE.

Is the 72-hour icon a live schedule?

On 16 Jun 2026 it was ROTA_72HR_runway_closure.pdf for a 25 May–14 July closure. That is a dated product. After 14 Jul 2026 it is not a standing board. Open whatever PDF the live icon points to today.

Do I still need to show up an extra hour early for COVID screening?

The page still says that. Treat COVID medical screening as leftover language. The still-current clock is roll call 3 hours prior.

Can a retiree or DAV just drive on for Space-A?

Not from the Lodge/NGIS access pages. Navy Lodge: DAV no base access; DoD retirees no access unless previously approved. NGIS still lists retirees with DD Form 2. Those two official lodging pages disagree on retirees. Do not assume gate access. Confirm with the installation; a lodging reservation is not a pass.

Is there a shuttle from the AMC terminal to lodging?

NGIS official page: shuttle service available at the AMC Terminal. Cabs on base: Rota cab only.

USO hours 16:30 or also on flight days?

AMC: Mon–Fri 08:30–16:30 and AMC flights supported. USO.org: Mon–Fri 0830–1630 only. If your show is overnight, do not count on USO.

Summer lodging?

AMC: July, August, September are high season; book ahead. On-base rooms are very limited.

Directory DSN 2171?

Not on the terminal contact block. Page DSN is 314-727-2411 only (runway banner repeated DSN 727-2411).

Installation Facebook = 72-hour board?

No. The link is the US Naval Station Rota page, not a terminal schedule icon.

Distance to town / commercial air?

Page: Jerez 39 km, Cadiz 44 km, Sevilla 125 km, Madrid 651 km. Train: El Puerto de Santa Maria and Jerez. Commercial airports: Jerez, Sevilla, Malaga.
