Aviano Air Base in northern Italy hosts Space-A flights at an AMC passenger terminal on an Italian military NATO airfield. Official AMC traveler pages restrict travel to and from Schengen countries because Italian Border Police and Customs are not permanently present at the counter. The host 31st Fighter Wing is the only U.S. fighter wing south of the Alps, so this USAFE stop sits on NATO's southern-region map rather than as a cargo or tanker gateway.

Where is the passenger terminal?

AMC Aviano Passenger Terminal, 724th Air Mobility Squadron, Unit 6165 Box 215, APO AE 09604.

Workbook mailing address matches. GPS a 724 AMS / Area F terminal pin, not a generic “Aviano AB” pin. On base. The AMC page does not publish a terminal-map URL. A 2009 AMC news article (not a map) placed the then-new NATO terminal about a quarter-mile down the street past the old vehicle pass and registration office on Area F — that is historical location color, not a current walking-time promise.

How do I get on base / which gate should I use?

Aviano is an Italian military base. Access is not a U.S. gate-roll. The AMC page and aviano.af.mil Visiting Aviano Air Base both require an Installation Access Request (IAR) for most visitors.

IAR (AMC page + visiting page):

  • DoD active duty and civilians not PCSing to Aviano or already stationed in Italy: IAR 30 days before the visit start date.
  • Other visitors without an escort/sponsor: IAR 3–4 weeks (AMC page) / 30 days (visiting page — flag that wording split). Email 31sfs.lvis.orgbox@us.af.mil or 31sfs.vcc.vcc@us.af.mil.
  • IARs must be sponsored by a commander stationed at Aviano. SFS commander signs for retirees / unaffiliated walk-ins; OSS commander normally signs for unaffiliated aircrew.

ETP on the AMC page: people intending to stay no longer than 2 days and 1 night may be allowed without an IAR (intent was transient aircraft/aircrew). Space-A travelers must still find lodging in the local economy and travel with leave orders / leave addresses showing Italy as a destination, to abide by host-nation rules.

Bldg 14650 vs Bldg 1235 and 7 a.m.–5 p.m. vs 8 a.m.–4 p.m. are flagged. Use the live Visiting Aviano page for gate/VCC; use the AMC terminal page for passenger-counter hours. A 2011 gate-hours news article (South Gate 24-hour, North Gate 0600–2200, VCC at Gate 7 0700–1700) is not current. CAC/DBIDS holders use an open vehicle-access gate; retirees without an approved IAR should not assume they can roll up at 0330 on a Sunday.

What are hours, phone, DSN, and email?

Hours (AMC page — wins): Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–3 p.m. (0800–1500). Closed weekends and holidays. Workbook lead 0800-1500 matches the AMC page.

Conflict — do not silently pick the fact sheet: aviano.af.mil 724th AMS Space Available Fact Sheet still prints Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. That is not the AMC terminal-page clock.

24-hour flight recording (AMC page): Comm N/A · DSN N/A. The fact sheet still lists a recording at DSN 314-632-7680 — flagged stale vs the AMC page.

  • Directory DSN (312) 632-7680 vs page 314-632-7680. Do not publish AMC (312) as a commercial number. Aviano’s printed DSN prefix on the terminal page is 314.

Fact sheet also lists information 632-7680 or 7924. Treat 7924 as extra fact-sheet color, not a replacement for 7680/8242.

How do I sign up for Space-A?

Email AvianoSpaceA@us.af.mil, or use the HQ AMC Space-A email form and select Aviano AB Italy. Aviano is on the 40-location form.

HQ AMC does not process sign-up. The AMC form warns the terminal may not receive the email. Print the completed form or confirmation and bring it. AMC Travel Self-Signup Tool is available for AMC locations — use whichever channel the live AMC Space-A page is pointing to the day you sign up.

Remote email sign-up is not a Schengen/immigration waiver.

How and when do I mark present?

The AMC page does not use the phrase “mark present.” Be in person at the AMC ticket counter for roll call. Have passports, orders, and all bags. Email sign-up is not presence.

Because there is no standing immigration/customs shop, showing up for a non-Schengen mission that was never advertised will not create a seat.

When is roll call?

Duty (AMC page): at the AMC ticket counter 2 hours 20 minutes prior to departure. Arrive about one hour before roll call (medical-screening pad on the page).

Duty-standby / Space-A (AMC page): at the AMC ticket counter 3 hours prior. Arrive one or two hours before that roll call.

The Roll Call icon on the 16 Jun 2026 snapshot was a DNN `LinkClick.aspx` fileticket that Wayback 404’d — not a verified product URL. Check the live icon. All flights can change or delay without notice.

When should duty / PE passengers check in?

Not printed as a separate PE NLT clock (this is not a PE-advertised gateway). Use the duty 2h20m / Space-A 3h roll-call times above, plus the 72-hour if one is posted.

Late-arrival rebooking language is not on the Aviano HTML (unlike Ramstein). Do not invent a Customer Service script.

Does this terminal operate Patriot Express flights? If yes, to where?

No PE product is published. There is no 30-day PE icon. The AMC page states Space-A to/from Aviano (LIPA) is restricted to Schengen countries, and Space-A out of the Schengen region is not advertised (including to the United States) because there is no permanent Italian Border Police / Customs presence.

FCG quote on the page: travelers on Schengen itineraries must clear customs at the Schengen location before arriving in Italy. Listed Schengen countries on that HTML: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Do not treat a blog “Aviano–Ramstein–BWI” rumor as a rotator. This FAQ does not quote live seats.

Where is short-term and long-term parking, max days, and pass rules?

Not published on the AMC Aviano HTML page. Do not copy unofficial garage writeups.

Transportation to the installation is extremely limited. The AMC page points questions to the Taxi Service Line +39 0434-36-8020. That is a taxi lead on the official page, not a parking rule.

What lodging is nearby on-base and off-base?

On base (Air Force Inns, checked 27 Aug 2026):

- Mountain View Lodge (Aviano), 31 FSS/FSVL, OPC 103 Box 18, APO AE 09604-9001. https://af.dodlodging.net/propertys/Aviano Main 011-39-0434-175-8194, 0434-30-4040, 039-0434-30-4040. 1-888-AF-LODGE is CONUS only. Check-in from 1400; check-out before 1100. Pets/children: call the desk; AF Inns says do not rely on the web form. No nightly rates published here.

Access vs room: aviano.af.mil Visiting page: personnel not assigned to Aviano who want MVL must complete an IAR with Security Forces first. MVL reservations alone will not grant base access. IAR can take 3–4 weeks. Visitors on base 2200–0700 need proof they are booked at MVL.

Off-base: The AMC page tells Space-A travelers to use the local economy. No hotel list or rates on the AMC HTML.

Is there a USO, food, Wi-Fi, showers, lockers?

USO: AMC page: “Unfortunately there is no USO Service at the Passenger Terminal.”

Fact-sheet amenities (724 AMS Space Available Fact Sheet, aviano.af.mil — not the AMC HTML): children’s lounge, Wi-Fi, fax machine, charging stations, DSN and international phones. Showers and lockers are not on that list. Treat the fact sheet as official-adjacent color; if it conflicts with the live AMC page, AMC page wins.

What documents are required?

Duty / space-required: Travel orders and destination documents (passports, NATO orders, visas, FCG). Have them on your person.

Space-A: Eligibility under DoDI 4515.13, DoD Force Health Protection, and the Foreign Clearance Guide. Schengen restriction above. Leave orders / Italian leave address if you are using the 2-day/1-night ETP path.

On 22 Apr 2022 AMC lifted COVID Space-A limits; you still follow current FHP/FCG. Do not pack passports in a checked bag.

What are baggage limits and Space-A/PE fees if published?

Bags (AMC Aviano page): 2 checked bags per person, 70 lb and 62 linear inches each. One carry-on plus one personal item that fits under a seat.

Excess baggage (AMC page): $125 per excess bag.

PE head tax: Not published (no PE product). Do not copy Ramstein’s $41.63 onto Aviano.

Can I travel with pets from here?

The AMC page links the AMC Pet Travel page in the chrome. It does not publish an Aviano-specific pet-slot policy, kennel rule, or “pets not accepted” banner.

You own the paperwork (microchip, shots, destination/FCG). Call the service counter before you count on a pet space. See the AMC Pet Travel page.

Where are schedules posted?

On the official AMC Aviano page:

  • 72-Hour icon — on 16 Jun 2026 the href was https://amc.usaf.afpims.mil/ (CMS root, not a board). Body text: “The 72-hour Schedule will be posted as opportunities become available.” Mention without a working URL = not a standing board**.
  • Roll Call icon — unverified fileticket on that snapshot.
  • Advice to Passengers PDF (`Social Media Advice To Passengers.pdf`).
  • No 30-day / PE product. No terminal Facebook on the official page (AMC/USAF footer only). The 724 AMS fact sheet “Like us on Facebook” is not a verified schedule channel.

Can I Space-A from Aviano to the United States?

Not advertised. The AMC page says Space-A out of the Schengen region is not advertised, including to the United States, because Italian Border Police / Customs are not permanently in the terminal.

Which Schengen countries count?

Use the FCG list printed on the AMC page (Austria through Switzerland, quoted above). Do not add countries from a blog.

Do I need an IAR if I am retiring through Aviano for two nights of Space-A?

The 2-day/1-night ETP is written for transient aircrew intent. The same paragraph tells Space-A travelers to stay off-base. Do not treat the ETP as a retiree hotel pass. Ask VCC / the counter; bring leave papers.

Is 0730–1630 still the counter clock?

No as a current AMC-page figure. AMC page is 0800–1500 M–F. The 724 AMS fact sheet 0730–1630 is a flagged conflict.

Is 011-039-0434-03-7680 the U.S. dial string?

Do not use the directory “03” string as the winner. Official page: 0434-30-7680 / 011-039-0434-30-7680, plus 8242.

Is DSN (312) 632-7680 a commercial number I can dial from a U.S. cell?

No. Do not publish (312) as commercial. Page DSN prefix is 314.

Where is roll call, exactly?

AMC ticket counter — 2h20m (duty) or 3h (Space-A). Not an unnamed lobby kiosk.

Is there a 24-hour recording?

AMC page: N/A. Do not call a fact-sheet recording as if the live AMC page still advertised one.

Can I pay excess-bag fees in cash?

Not published on the Aviano HTML (no cash/card rule). Confirm at the counter.

Will Mountain View Lodge get me on base at 2200?

Reservation ≠ access. IAR + visitor pass first. Overnight on-base stays need MVL proof (visiting page).

Is the 2009 “new NATO terminal” still the building?

The 2009 AMC article describes the facility that opened then. The live AMC page does not reprint a building number. Do not invent Bldg XXXX from blogs.

Are weekends ever staffed for a pop-up mission?

AMC page: closed weekends and holidays. The 72-hour posts “as opportunities become available.” Do not plan a Sunday show from a rumor.
